“Conrad Castillo was a Filipino Steward in the US Navy during World War II assigned directly to serve Admiral William “Bull” Halsey, Five-Star Fleet Admiral in the Pacific War. Twenty-five years ago, Castillo’s grandson, Jeff Mossinghoff discovered his grandfather’s wartime journal. History sleuth and WWII expert Lars McKie has done a remarkable job transcribing the journal and correlating its observations to big historical events: the Battle of Leyte Gulf, “Halsey’s Typhoon,” and the Japanese surrender aboard Halsey’s flagship, the USS Missouri, on September 2, 1945.
